Cuba says Ebola doctor to leave Swiss hospital
A Cuban doctor infected with Ebola in Sierra Leone will soon be released from the hospital in Switzerland where he has been receiving treatment, the Cuban health ministry said Friday.
"The tests carried out confirm the disappearance of the virus in his body fluids, so he will soon be released," the ministry said in a statement.
The doctor, Felix Baez Sarria, will then return to Cuba, it said.
Baez, 43, was part of a Cuban medical brigade sent to combat the potentially deadly virus in the west African country.
He contracted the virus and was flown to Geneva University Hospital on November 20, the first Ebola patient to be brought to Switzerland.
The hospital said on November 25 that he had shown "significant improvement" after treatment with experimental drugs.
Cuba has played a leading role in the global effort to fight the Ebola outbreak, sending about 250 doctors and nurses to Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, the three countries hit hardest.
It has pledged to send 700 doctors and nurses in all.
The outbreak has killed 6,113 people out of 17,256 cases detected, according to the most recent figures from the World Health Organization.
