Energy drinks do not make youngsters smarter, study finds

Drinking one energy drink has no effect whatsoever on the cognitive performance of secondary school pupils. This is the conclusion reached by University of Twente psychologist Pascal Wilhelm (department of Instructional Technology) and three co-researchers after a study of 103 pupils at a secondary school in the Dutch province of Overijssel. The results of the study will be published in the journal Tijdschrift voor Psychiatrie. One particularly unusual aspect of the study is that three of the four researchers were still at school themselves at the time of the study.

3Qs: Energy drinks: What's in your can?

Over the last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has confirmed it is investigating health reports citing energy drinks 5-hour Energy and Monster Energy as a possible factor in the deaths of 18 people since 2009 and the hospitalization of numerous others since 2004. But the potentially fatal danger of these beverages hasn't stopped consumers from purchasing them. According to Beverage Digest, sales of energy drinks in the U.S. hit a record high last year, growing an estimated 16 percent to $8.9 billion. Adam Woolley, assistant clinical professor of pharmacy practice in Bouvé College of Health Sciences, weighs in on the FDA report and explains why students should think twice about what they consume.

Risks of mixing drugs and herbal supplements: What doctors and patients need to know

Herbal, dietary, and energy or nutritional supplements may offer specific health benefits, but they can also have harmful and even life-threatening effects when combined with commonly used medications. Clinicians need to be aware of and educate their patients about the potential risks of mixing supplements and therapeutic agents, since their interaction can diminish or increase drug levels. This timely topic is explored in a provocative article in Alternative and Complementary Therapies, published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. The article is available free on the Alternative and Complementary Therapies website at www.liebertpub.com/act.

Drinking energy beverages mixed with alcohol may be riskier than drinking alcohol alone

Energy drinks mixed with alcohol, such as Red Bull and vodka, have become trendy. While this consumption has been implicated in risky drinking practices and associated accidents and injuries, there is little laboratory research on how the effects of this combination differ from those of drinking alcohol alone. A recent laboratory study, comparing measures of intoxication due to alcohol alone versus alcohol/energy drink, has found that the combination of the energy drink enhanced feelings of stimulation in participants. However, the energy drink did not change the level of impairment for impulsive behavior. These findings suggest that energy drinks combined with alcohol may increase the risks associated with drinking.
