Researchers from the University of Twente, MST and Politecnico di Milano conducted a pilot study to explore whether a GPT-controlled social robot can support patients with medical information in a hospital setting. The first results are cautiously positive: patients and caregivers accept the technology. The research focuses on technical, organizational and ethical feasibility.

Genes, smoking and obesity raise pneumonia risk, especially for older adults

Researchers at the University of Oulu have identified genes that increase susceptibility to pneumonia. Alongside inherited risk factors, smoking and higher body mass were also found to raise the risk of developing the disease. The study, published in eBioMedicine, identified a total of 12 genetic regions associated with pneumonia risk, eight of which were identified for the first time. Many of these regions are linked to the regulation of the body's inflammatory response. However, among patients with recurrent pneumonia and among older patients, genes associated with nicotine dependence played a particularly prominent role.

A DGIST research team identified that the mutation of the collybistin protein found in autistic patients weakens the brain's inhibitory synaptic function and leads to communication deficiencies. The results of this research are expected to clarify the cause of autism at the molecular level and offer important clues for developing treatments for autism spectrum disorders and various other mental illnesses in the future.

For example, they play key roles in the development of cartilage and blood vessels, and they can also protect against inflammation and infection. But their role in cancer is less clear: while some proteoglycans protect against cancer, others can promote tumor growth.

Three of the leading chatbots can provide basic information about endometriosis, a painful gynecologic condition that affects up to 1 in 10 women, but their responses are not as comprehensive as the guidance from health care providers, according to a study by UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers. Their findings, published in AJOG Global Reports, sound a cautionary note for patients who turn to generative artificial intelligence (AI) for medical information.
