Article highlights top technology challenges for 2015

(HealthDay)—The introduction of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) audits, meaningful use 2, and the burdens of technology are the top four technological challenges for physicians in 2015, according to an article published in Medical Economics.

Among the challenges that physicians are likely to face in 2015, the authors describe the four issues relating to technology.

According to the article, ICD-10 will be implemented in 2015, with no more delays expected. Practices should continue training for ICD-10 and be prepared for the costs associated with its implementation. Although the chances of being audited for HIPAA violations are small, it is increasingly complicated to keep patient information secure. HIPAA will audit about 150 in 2015. In addition, the challenges associated with meaningful use 2 are unlikely to get easier in 2015: Medicare reimbursements will decrease by 1 percent for eligible professionals for each year they don't meet meaningful use requirements.

Finally, the burdens of technology as well as the associated costs will be an issue for 2015, with costs unlikely to decrease in the foreseeable future. In addition to , there are costs of hardware and software when a practice adds an electronic health record, with the technical support and maintenance required for these systems presenting further challenges.
