One tonne of contaminated egg product found in Romania: officials
One tonne of egg yolk liquid contaminated with the insecticide fipronil has been found in Romania, the first discovery in eastern Europe since the tainted egg scandal erupted, the veterinary health authority said Thursday.
The egg yolk liquid found in a warehouse in the west of the country was imported from Germany, but "none of the product has been offered for sale," the Romanian authority ANSVSA said.
The discovery came about after "a specific alert from the European Commission" as part of its rapid response system regarding human and animal food, ANSVSA spokeswoman Alina Monea told AFP.
"Our inspectors are monitoring poultry farms around the country," she added.
Romania brings to nine the number of European countries affected by the spiralling egg contamination that started in the Netherlands where farmers are believed to have used a substance containing the fipronil insecticide to treat red lice in chickens.
