#MeToo sparked surge in awareness about sexual harassment: study

(HealthDay)—Hundreds of thousands of women have used the #MeToo hashtag to speak out about sexual harassment and assault during the past year.

Now there's evidence that the #MeToo movement sparked more than mere conversation about in the United States.

Google searches for information about sexual harassment and assault—as well as reporting or preventing such behavior—spiked in the months after actress Alyssa Milano brought the #MeToo movement fresh attention in October 2017, a study published online Dec. 21 in JAMA Internal Medicine found.

"Our study reveals that even months after the beginning of #MeToo, millions more than otherwise expected are seeking out help for online," said senior researcher John Ayers, an associate adjunct professor with the University of California, San Diego. "Revealing this record-setting and sustained engagement is a call to action for the nation."

Searches related to sexual harassment and assault were 51 percent higher than expected between Oct. 15, 2017 and June 15, 2018, Ayers and his colleagues found.

On the afternoon of Oct. 15, 2017, Milano responded to public accusations of sexual harassment and assault against film producer Harvey Weinstein with a tweet sent to her followers: "If you've been sexually harassed or assaulted write 'me too' as a reply to this tweet."

Searches related to reporting sexual assault and preventive training on sexual harassment were 30 percent higher during that same period, researchers found.

"#MeToo is not the first movement to empower victims of sexual violence, but what is unique compared to past movements is #MeToo's staying power," Ayers said. "Eight months since the initiation of #MeToo, millions more than expected are seeking out help for sexual violence online. #MeToo's sustainability, and our study alerting leaders to this, could yield major wins for the nation's public health."

These findings verify that #MeToo made a real difference in terms of raising awareness and prompting action, said Karestan Koenen, a professor of psychiatric epidemiology with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

"Anecdotally, we've known it's made a difference," Koenen said. "I feel like this is some of the first real data we have that these aren't just anecdotes, that this movement is making a huge difference."

Sharyn Tejani, director of the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund, has been on the receiving end of those Google searches.

The National Women's Law Center created the defense fund in January 2018, in the wake of #MeToo.

"Since then, over 3,800 people have reached out to us seeking assistance for workplace sexual harassment," Tejani said. "People send us requests for assistance online, and so it does seem like people are using online tools. We've received many more requests for assistance than we ever thought we would receive."

Koenen found the searches related to reporting or preventing to be most promising.

"As a trauma psychologist, I know sharing one's sexual assault experiences can be very validating and healing for people, but beyond that, what we want to see is change," she said. "That's the most exciting finding to me, because it's going beyond all of us sharing this experience. Maybe people are taking action that will really result in change."

The response to the #MeToo movement has revealed a huge public health problem in the United States that must be addressed, Ayers said.

"Survivors face serious health consequences, including physical injury, PTSD symptoms and emotional trauma," Ayers said. "Yet public investments in preventing and responding to sexual violence is disproportionately small compared with other health issues. With millions more than ever voicing their needs, our nation's leaders should respond by investing in enhanced prevention training and improving resources for survivors."

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
la la la la la point of view
Pick an ugly girl to marry you

ROFLOL

Today's American women seem to believe that they are so attractive that American men will make fools of themselves for the chance to date them.
All that these women will achieve is to never find anyone to marry them - and they will grow old alone and bitter. Most American men and teenage boys have learned the hard lesson to not put themselves in a compromising position where they could be accused of something that they didn't do to these Feminazis.

I honestly never knew there was a problem. Seriously, all this did was make it harder to work with women, because men are going to be even more on guard that anything they say or do will be considered sexual harassment. Next women will feel ignored. There is no winning. Liberals really make things worse every time they do something. But they feel good because they are making a difference.

I honestly never knew there was a problem
My guess would be that you don't care that there is a problem. It is easier not to care. If you have a computer, or a t.v. - you could know about Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer, Roger Ailes etc. etc. etc. A quick check of google will give you all the names you want.
all this did was make it harder to work with women
I have never felt there was a problem working with women. No one I know complains of some secret problem of working with women. Go to your conduct in the workplace training - and you can learn how to behave properly.....
But they feel good because they are making a difference
Yep - we would not want to be decent human beings - and not make other people uncomfortable would we? (sarcasm).

The problem is that nobody discusses the sins of women it is all one sided.

There is nothing stopping you from discussing the sins of women.
In my opinion - the problem is that we live in a culture - in which many men - behave in horrible, disrespectful manner towards women. https://www.vox.c...ons-list

Here is just one example - https://www.vox.c...xplained Please read that article. 300 young women's lives ruined by one pig.

Can you provide any support that large numbers of women behave in such a manner. Show me even one example...

Surveillance_Egg_Unit You are right. I already know a couple of people with small business'es that won't even consider hiring a female anymore simply because they don't even want the possibility of any of their male employees being charged with harassment and one of them is actually being run by a woman! She told me bluntly that she considers at least 75% of 'modern' women to be "stupider than a damn rock" and that's her words not mine.

she considers at least 75% of 'modern' women to be "stupider than a damn rock
Wow - it is so hard to know how to respond to such misogyny. Larry Nassar rapes 300 of Americas top young female athletes. USA gymnastics Association covers it all up. And you post that it is all because 75% of women are 'stupider that a damn rock.' You are sickening. I work in Education. Some years I am in High School, other years I am in Elementary. This year I am the only male staff person - other than the janitor. Guess what 24? I have never ever worried about any problem in terms of being falsely accused of sexual harassment. I have never heard of that happening to any of my male colleagues. No 24 volt - Bill Cosby, Larry Nassar, Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer, etc. etc. etc. - are not victims of 'stupid women.' They are men who thought they were untouchable, and did terrible things. I am glad the tide is turning.

You obviously have severe problems with comprehending what you read or you are just another stupid troll so I'm not going to waste my time on you.

so I'm not going to waste my time on you
What ever. I comprehend comments very well thanks. You were the one who posted on an article about the Me Too movement - increasing awareness of the issue of sexual harassment in our world. Surveillance egg then posts misogynistic bullshit like this
All that these women will achieve is to never find anyone to marry them
Oh that's right - all women need is to find a man to marry them (sarcasm) - and you chime in behind him - saying that he is right, and you have a friend who believes that 75% of women are stupid. No 24volt - it is not a comprehension problem. You are not interested in listening to your own bullshit. So don't waste your time with me. And I will keep throwing in my comments - when I see the misogyny and racism rearing it's head. You are welcome - it's the least I can do.

13/15 embezzlement cases are women. The problem is that embezzlement almost always results in firing, but never prosecuted. There is probably 10000 news articles about me2 type news to 1 news article of female embezzlement. https://www.press...-way-in. Women are awesome in so many ways. The problem is that people being abused by other people is a power issue. People in power become corrupt.

Does all this posturing hurt your back? Or is it the sitting on the couch all day watching the soaps and baiting people on the internet with your ipad?

There are people who act poorly, people in power, most men are not in power, as most women are not in power. The way in the news is to always look at men's poor behavior, but not women's. It is an attack on men. The news should focus on abuse of power. Unchecked it corrupts all.

Yes - but today's article is about the Me Too movement - and sexual harassment.
The problem is that people being abused by other people is a power issue
Sure - I agree. So in the broken society that we live in - speaking truth to power is very important. That is what the Me Too movement is all about.

grandpa
The way in the news is to always look at men's poor behavior, but not women's
You're deflecting. Sexual harassment is predominantly a male issue. It is in some ways structural. In many of our industries, men hold the top positions. Look at how many women are in congress, and how many female presidents we have had. So if you're interested in looking at how pervasive, and evil the issue of sexual harassment is - you could start maybe here - https://slate.com...ats.html
the organizers blamed me and other harassed women in our community for driving women away by talking about our harassment
Jerks like Otto above would like people who want to see a more fair, and kind society - go away - which is why he bullies people like me with childish comments - rather than actually engaging the issues.

Dec 24, 2018
So call up your uberlibtard congresspersons and get them to pass another law. That's what they're there for, isnt it?

If a woman mentally or physically abuses a man, it is called PMS a medical condition. However, philandering, skirt-chasing, womanizing, or worst yet called a predator, even though none of these terms have a scientific or medically objective criteria. Essentially, if they were to be given an objective meaning it would likely be stated in terms similar to PMS, or hormonal male titers outside WNLs.
Obviously, PMS and other aggressive human behaviors need to be treated equally under the law.

Sexual harassment is predominantly a male issue. It is in some ways structural
Structural??

Here, let me mansplain mating to you. The male pursues, the female resists.
https://youtu.be/uw3-mCgf6oo

-culture teaches men how to be civil about it. It teaches women how to say no.

But today's western version of culture is a whole nother animal. The transition to a whole 'new world order' put women on top, so to speak.

Birthing becomes more dangerous as women age, due to the size of the human head. When women are put in charge of the mating process they will naturally want to limit the number and frequency of pregnancies. And they will want to choose the best possible donor for each and every child they wish to bear.

The male strategy in contrast is to impregnate as many females as possible, to ensure the survival of his genes to the next gen.

IOW for men its quantity, for women its quality.
Cont>

Dec 25, 2018
Religions favor the male strategy as it's the fastest way of growing the flock for the purpose of outgrowing and overrunning, the hallmark of all of today's surviving religions.

But western culture seeks to inhibit pop growth. The world is now full, conquest is no longer a priority.

So when papa bush announced the NWO in his speech on 11-9-90, 10 years to the day before the attack on the WTC that announced the last great offensive by the west on the male religionist order (the phallic towers being castrated on live tv a dead giveaway), he was revealing a very real transition from the male to the female in the cultural heirarchy.

This extends to the very process of mating itself. The woman now absolutely determines when, and where, and with whom the mating will occur. ANY transgression on the part of the male carries a swift and severe punishment.

Contrast this with similar transgressions of muslim women in that male-dominated, religionist society.

Dec 25, 2018
This overarching quest for quality over quantity will soon be turned against women themselves.

The main cause of crime and misery within the species it can be argued, is the disparity in intellect and overall mental health among individuals. A majority of people born today have been damaged in the womb by irresponsible women who are unfit and unqualified to be mothers.

This was different back when humans lived in small, compact settlements where accrued wisdom on prenatal care and child rearing was passed from gen to gen, and the village effectively raised the child.

Today's women by and large are not privy to that wisdom and oversight. Too many people are born to women addicted to tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. Too many are overweight and convey genetic defects that would have been weeded out of pleistocene gene pools.

We now have the ability to fix genetic defects in the womb, and further to protect fetuses intended to be brought to term with remote, real time monitoring.

Dec 25, 2018
And since we have that ability, we have the imperative to do so. No woman has the right to ruin the entire LIFE of another human being just because she couldn't stop drinking.

The womb is no longer sacred. Society has the right to ensure the health and well being of its citizens. And this right will soon extend into the womb.

Childbearing and rearing is arguably the most important profession on the planet and yet it is the only one without requirements on a minimum standard of education, experience, moral responsibility, and emotional stability.

Society ought to demand that women be mature, responsible, and healthy enough before they be allowed to conceive. And this should be the demand of fellow women for whom the quality of the product of their wombs is of paramount importance.

The village can still raise the child. Technology is now making this possible.

Dec 25, 2018
Here, let me mansplain mating to you
Why don't you keep your mansplaining to yourself. Well - it's a free world - so if you want to announce to the world that you are not only a racist - but also an ignorant misogynist too!!. Let me demonstrate for you
Today's women by and large are not privy to that wisdom and oversight.
Well - most women I know who have had children (including my wife who had 2) make regular trips to the doctor during pregnancy, take pre-natal vitamins, have ultrasounds, and generally practice a very high quality of pre-natal care. But let's assume that you are right - and women today are less rigorous in terms of their pre-natal health care. That has nothing to do with today's topic - which is sexual harassment. In other words - as a typical Conservative - you default to your mansplaining bullshit - and of course veer off topic - and start rambling.

Otto
A majority of people born today have been damaged in the womb by irresponsible women who are unfit and unqualified to be mothers.
Would you like to support that with any data, or research? Please pay close attention to the words you used "A majority of people born today...."

Dec 26, 2018
support that
Sorry, I fear you lack the intellectual capability necessary to fully appreciate the data.

But for those of us here who might be sufficiently endowed...

"In James Flynn's book What Is Intelligence?: Beyond the Flynn Effect, he decomposes the gains in IQ found for American children in the Weschsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) and finds that much of the gains have come from tests of abstract thinking (similarities test and Raven's progressive matrices). Only a small portion of the gains is due to improvements in information, arithmetic and vocabulary. This observation would support the idea that increases in IQ have been driven by the changing way in which we live."

-IOW less damage due to increased awareness of fetal health, better diets and exercise, and the selective nature of ABORTION.
Cont>

Dec 26, 2018
There still exists a wide disparity in intellectual capability however, and this also reflects the delicate and damage-prone nature of the oversized and energy-hungry human brain.

Note in the chart 'social statistics relating to IQ:
http://webspace.s...nce.html

-that upwards of 50% of the population resides in the 90-110 IQ range. While considered 'normal' I argue that this reflects a certain amount of damage and genetic defect. Why arent all brains functioning above 110? Apparently the difference between a 90 IQ brain and a 135 IQ brain is a dysfunction of some sort. A less than healthy condition.

Dec 26, 2018
nothing to do with today's topic - which is sexual harassment
The vast majority of what is considered sexual harassment today -wasnt- only a gen or 2 ago. Judge kavanaugh gets accused of assaulting a woman way back in high school, an incident that was, by all accounts, normal alcohol-fueled horsing around. And this ridiculous accusation is enough to potentially negate all the good things he had accomplished in the interim, and ruin his life.

I gave you a nonpolitical explanation of WHY this is happening... the intent to reduce the birthrate. Overpopulation and the resulting tribalism is the greatest threat facing humanity today.

This dramatic shift in male/female power distribution and authority is another indication of just how serious the threat is, and of what measures are being implemented in order to mitigate it.

Artificial sociopolitical changes. Changes contrary to our fundamental biological propensities. Domestication.

Men who cannot comply are culled.

Dec 26, 2018
Heres only one deleterious factor causing intellectual deficit

"Compared with children of normal-weight mothers, children born to mothers who were overweight or obese immediately prior to pregnancy are at a higher risk for neurodevelopmental problems including attention deficit disorder, autism, and cognitive developmental delays, according to a Virginia Commonwealth University-led study."

"...17 percent higher among children born to mothers who were overweight prior to their pregnancy. The risk for adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes jumped to 51 percent among children born to mothers who were obese prior to pregnancy."

"More than 40 percent of women in the U.S. are obese, an increase from previous estimates according to a 2016 report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The prevalence of children diagnosed with mental, behavioral and neurodevelopmental disorders has increased markedly in recent years..."

-Gen after gen after gen... cumulative

So Otto said
A majority of people born today have been damaged in the womb by irresponsible women who are unfit and unqualified to be mothers
I asked Otto for some support for such a shocking, and specific assertion. The response is the rambling posts we get above. Plus of course the required attack on my intelligence
Sorry, I fear you lack the intellectual capability necessary to fully appreciate the data
Which roughly translates to "No I don't have the data to support this shocking, and quite specific assertion, so I will instead give you a pretty incoherent screed about IQ.

All of course interesting - in light of the fact that today's article - and my comments - are about sexual harassment. Plus of course bring in the Kavanaugh circus - and ignore the scores of other fully legitimate situations - such as Larry Nassar. What rubbish...

Not interested in 5 yr old exchanges of personal insults. Fact - today's article is about sexual harassment. Fact - Otto makes an outrageous and unsupported assertion -
A majority of people born today have been damaged in the womb by irresponsible women who are unfit and unqualified to be mothers
Fact - otto is totally unable to support such specific and shocking assertion - he resorts to 5 year old name calling. So what's your point otto? Just like to spend your time saying nanny nanny boo boo? I am here to promote a perspective - one that champions a more enlightened future - where we don't engage in racism, sexual harassment, etc. etc. etc. All the isms.
