Living in rural areas associated with worse health for people with epilepsy

For people with epilepsy, living in counties that are more rural was associated with poorer health outcomes than for people living in more urban counties, according to a study published in Neurology. People living in the most rural counties hospitalized for epilepsy had nearly twice the odds of dying in the hospital than those living in the most urban counties. The study does not prove that living in rural areas causes worse health; it only shows an association.

Researchers at the Advanced Science Research Center at the CUNY Graduate Center (CUNY ASRC) have uncovered a surprising link between low brain sugar levels and the development of myelin—the protective coating that allows nerve cells to communicate rapidly and efficiently.

Fluorescent proteins have revolutionized science, enabling researchers to tag and visualize individual molecules in living cells, tissues, and animals. Using these tools, researchers have watched viruses infect cells in real time, observed cellular trash collection, and tracked the signaling that spurs tumor growth.

Expanding access to palliative care for patients with advanced liver disease

Advanced liver disease (ALD) occurs when significant scarring causes the liver to lose function. Patients with ALD often have serious health challenges but have limited access to palliative care that could improve their quality of life. A new multicenter trial led by Manisha Verma, MD, and Victor Navarro, MD, at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital demonstrates a new approach that could potentially transform access to palliative care for patients with ALD and address a major care gap. The research is published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

Not wanting to eat protein may be early herald of cancer cachexia

A majority of people with advanced cancers endure cachexia, a muscle-, fat-, and organ-wasting condition that is currently incurable and can be life-threatening. Detecting and intervening early can slow progression, but poor understanding of how cachexia first arises in the body makes it difficult for doctors to identify the warning signs of impending wasting other than an overall loss of appetite (anorexia).

An analysis of the 2025 AHA/ACC hypertension guidelines found that under the new guidelines, about 11% of adults ages 65 to 79 with stage I hypertension would no longer qualify for blood pressure medication, a major shift from previous rules that recommended treatment for all adults in this age range. The newly exempt group is made up of generally healthy, lower-risk older adults whose predicted 10-year cardiovascular risk falls below the new treatment threshold. The analysis is published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

A research team led by Albert Einstein College of Medicine scientists has developed a new strategy to engineer immune cells that dramatically prolongs their effectiveness after being infused into patients to fight cancer and HIV, addressing a major limitation of current treatments. Their findings, published in Science Advances, describe a manufacturing approach that, compared to the existing process, generates longer-lasting immune cells that provide more sustained control of human blood cancers and suppression of HIV infection in mouse models.

Scientists at Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center (MECCC) and Albert Einstein College of Medicine have shown for the first time that glioblastoma—the deadliest form of brain cancer—affects not just the brain but also erodes the skull, alters the makeup of skull marrow, and interferes with the body's immune response. Drugs intended to inhibit skull-bone loss made the cancer more aggressive, according to results published in Nature Neuroscience. The paper is titled "Brain Tumors Induce Widespread Disruption of Calvarial Bone and Alteration of Skull Marrow Immune Landscape."

Women who develop bacterial vaginosis (BV) often later acquire chlamydia, a common and potentially serious sexually transmitted bacterial infection. Now, researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have found that BV actually consists of two subtypes—one of which significantly increases the risk of developing chlamydia infections.

Metastatic disease—when cancer spreads from the primary tumor to other parts of the body—is the cause of most cancer deaths. While researchers understand how cancer cells escape the primary site to seed new tumors, it's not well understood why some of these wayward cancer cells spawn new tumors—sometimes decades later—while others do not.

A new study, published in Nature Medicine, finds that an easy five-minute assessment, paired with recommendations built into the electronic medical record system, led to a three-fold improvement in diagnosis and treatment for patients in a primary care setting compared to a control group.
