Deep South HIV prevention care has gaps where patients need it most

A recent University of Mississippi study has identified hundreds of counties in the South where HIV prevention and health care may not be keeping pace with the local needs, leaving communities without resources to address the persistent problem. The research, published in Frontiers in Public Health, offers health care and government leaders a new tool for targeting HIV-related support where the need is highest.

Some 80% of Mississippi counties have no adult day service centers, and even counties that do have centers cannot meet the needs of people with dementia and their caregivers, a new University of Mississippi-led study indicates. This shortage leaves thousands of people with dementia—and their caregivers—without daily support.

Smart OLED patch uses light to automate drug delivery, doubling healing speed

Instead of applying ointment and attaching a bandage, a "smart patch that regulates treatment intensity on its own just by being attached" has appeared. A research team has developed a "self-regulating OLED wound healing patch" that combines light and drugs to pull up the wound recovery speed by about twice. It is expected to develop into an intelligent treatment technology where light regulates drug release according to the patient's condition in the future.

Dual immune response may keep HIV in check without medication

Imagine a game of chess where your opponent's king is in check. It cannot move, but the game is not over—the piece remains on the board. This is how the body might control HIV on its own: The virus would be contained and unable to replicate or spread, but it would not have been eliminated. This is the goal of Professor Ole Schmeltz Søgaard and an international team of researchers—to enable more patients' immune systems to keep the virus permanently in check without the need for daily medication. Their findings suggest that this requires two key components working in tandem: antibodies and T cells.

Storytelling may be a key to boosting memory

New research from the University of Mississippi suggests that telling stories—from ancient campfire tales to modern-day digital communication—may be tied to how human memory evolved. It also could be a key to improving everyday retention. Matthew Reysen, associate professor of psychology, and Ole Miss doctoral student Zoe Fischer recently put storytelling to the test. Their study, published in Evolutionary Psychology, has found that storytelling performs just as well, and sometimes better, than the current gold standard in mnemonic devices, a technique called survival processing.

Sildenafil—an active ingredient also marketed under the name of Viagra—improves symptoms in patients with Leigh syndrome. This has now been reported in the journal Cell by researchers at Charité—Universitätsmedizin Berlin, together with teams from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU), University Hospital Düsseldorf (UKD), and the Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology ITMP in Hamburg. In a pilot study involving six patients, sildenafil showed a positive effect on the course of the disease.

A new solution that could overcome the limitations of conventional hair-loss treatments is emerging. Heavy and rigid helmet-type phototherapy devices may soon become a thing of the past. A joint research team has developed a hat-like, wearable OLED-based phototherapy device and demonstrated that it can suppress hair-follicle cell aging by up to 92%, a key factor in hair-loss progression.
