Study on post-COVID-19 condition: Which factors have an impact on the risk

The risk of post-COVID-19 condition is lower after an omicron infection, after a fourth vaccination and if the person did not develop post-COVID-19 condition after the first infection. This is shown by a nationwide survey of almost 110,000 participants in the German National Cohort (NAKO Gesundheitsstudie) who were asked to provide information on long-lasting symptoms after a coronavirus infection and their infection and vaccination history.

Study finds neurological symptoms are not a direct result of SARS-CoV-2 infection of the brain

Scientists still are not sure how neurological symptoms arise in COVID-19. Is it because SARS-CoV-2 infects the brain? Or are these symptoms the result of inflammation in the rest of the body? A study by Charité—Universitätsmedizin Berlin has now produced evidence to support the latter theory. It was published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

Study finds significant increase in chronic anxiety and depressive symptoms in young adults

Since the coronavirus outbreak, the number of young adults with moderate to severe chronic anxiety and depressive symptoms has increased sharply. In the year before the pandemic 16.7% of 18- to 24-year-olds suffered from moderate to severe chronic anxiety and depressive symptoms. They were experiencing these complaints in March 2019, November 2019 and in March 2020. In the year after the pandemic, this had increased to 21.4%. This translates to an increase of about 73,000 young adults.

First discovered a year ago in South Africa, the SARS-CoV-2 variant later dubbed "omicron" spread across the globe at incredible speed. It is still unclear exactly how, when and where this virus originated. Now, a study published in the journal Science by researchers from Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin and a network of African institutions shows that omicron's predecessors existed on the African continent long before cases were first identified, suggesting that omicron emerged gradually over several months in different countries across Africa.

How historical precedents impeded recognition of airborne COVID-19 transmission

Millions of people have died of coronavirus infection since 2020 because influential institutions took too long to recognize that it is primarily airborne, and a new University of Colorado Boulder-led historical analysis sheds light on the delay. The authors trace this deadly resistance one hundred years back in history, to the rejection of sickly air called "miasma," the rise of germ theory and our own stubborn tendency to retain beliefs in spite of accumulating evidence to the contrary.

Many patients suffering from an autoimmune disease such as rheumatism, ulcerative colitis or psoriasis must take medicine that affects their immune system. As the immune system also determines the effectiveness of vaccinations, some of those suffering from autoimmune diseases wonder whether it is safe for them to be vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 without incurring any complications as a direct result of the vaccine, and whether the vaccine will be just as effective and offer them protection for the same period as time as healthy people.

In the scientific journal PNAS, the researchers, led by Prof. Jan Lipfert, who recently joined Utrecht University, presented their method and suggested the finding could lead to the formulation of drugs designed to prevent the coronavirus from binding.
