Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral disease which began in the New Delhi region of India, has spread to 16 other states, having claimed a total of 86 lives.

Health authorities said the total number of cases reported exceed 4,000 across the country, reports the Press Trust of India.

New Delhi accounted for 23 deaths out of 1,101 cases reported.

India's Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss visited the premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences, which is treating most of the cases reported in the capital.

A major national campaign is underway to stop the spread of the disease.
