(AP)—Members of the national organization that manages organ transplants are voicing concern about a federal judge's ruling to make two sick children at a Pennsylvania hospital eligible for adult lungs.
The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network executive committee is hearing from medical experts on how lungs are allocated to young people who need transplants. Committee member Alexandra Glazier said during the Monday teleconference that judicial intervention is "not an appropriate approach" to managing organ donation.
Judge Michael Baylson ruled last week that a dying 10-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy in a Philadelphia hospital should be eligible for lungs from adults as well as children.
OPTN spokeswoman Anne Paschke says the committee could order modifications to existing rules or take other action at the end of the meeting.
