(HealthDay)—Heart disease is the leading cause of death among American women, but there are a number of preventive measures women can take, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says.

"The risk of increases for everyone as they age. For women, the risk goes up after menopause, but younger women can also develop heart disease," FDA cardiologist Dr. Shari Targum said in an agency news release.

One in four American women dies from heart disease, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Here, the FDA offers six ways you can reduce your risk:

It's also important for women to work with their team to make a plan for their heart health, the FDA recommended.
