Vasectomy reversal outcomes up with same partner as before

(HealthDay)—Fertility outcomes are improved for men who undergo vasectomy reversal and have the same female partner as before vasectomy, according to a study published in the January issue of The Journal of Urology.

Kevin A. Ostrowski, M.D., from the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, and colleagues conducted a retrospective study to examine fertility outcomes of 3,135 vasectomy reversals. They examined fertility outcomes for participants, including the 524 patients who underwent microsurgical vasectomy reversal and had the same female partner as before vasectomy, of whom 49 percent had complete information available.

The researchers found that the clinical pregnancy rate was 83 percent by natural means among those with the same female partner and 60 percent in the general vasectomy reversal population (P < 0.0001). The odds ratio was 2.0 for vasectomy reversal with the same female partner, after controlling for female partner, patient age, and years from vasectomy (P < 0.007). At reversal, the average patient and female partner ages were 38.9 and 33.2 years, respectively.

"Outcomes of clinical pregnancy and live birth rates are higher in men who undergo microsurgical with the same female partner," the authors write. "These outcomes may be related to a shorter interval from , previous fertility, and couple motivation."
