AMA announces initiative to reinvent physician training

(HealthDay)—The American Medical Association (AMA) today announced a new $15 million competitive grant initiative, the "Reimagining Residency" initiative, aimed at improving residency training.

The AMA will award $15 million over five years to eight innovations that promote systemic change in graduate medical education. The innovations will be chosen from U.S. graduate medical education sponsors, medical schools, health systems, and/or medical specialty societies. The organizations whose initiatives are chosen will join an AMA-convened consortium to jointly evaluate successes and lessons learned and promote dissemination and adoption of innovations.

From Jan. 3 through Feb. 1, 2019, organizations interested in applying for the initiative must submit letters of intent describing the goals and scope of their proposed projects. The AMA will then invite a select group of organizations to submit full proposals by April 17, 2019, and will announce the selected organizations at its annual meeting in June 2019.

As part of the consortium, the eight selected institutional partners will meet to agree on "standardized criteria for student assessment, resident selection procedures, on-boarding/transition of students to , off-cycle selection of residents, core curriculum for residents in science, and a common evaluation program that measures performance, patient outcomes, and learner well-being," the AMA wrote in a press release.
