E. coli outbreak sickens 7 and closes Greenwood daycare

A South Carolina daycare has agreed to temporarily close after seven cases of E. coli were traced to the center.

The Learning Vine in Greenwood says it is thoroughly cleaning its daycare and has entered an agreement with the Department of Health and Environmental Control on how it will prevent any other cases of the bacteria.

DHEC says its testing has determined that at least four of the seven cases are the same strain. Two people remain in the hospital.

E. coli bacteria live in the intestines of healthy people, and a few strains cause severe diarrhea and vomiting. The best way to stop the illness is to wash hands thoroughly after using the bathroom or changing a diaper and clean surfaces that might have been contaminated by .
