New model proposed for hypersensitivity/Allergic disease

(HealthDay)—A new model has been proposed for classification of hypersensitivity/allergic diseases ahead of the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), according to a position paper published online March 4 in Allergy.

Luciana Kase Tanno, M.D., from the Hospital Sírio Libanês in Brazil, and colleagues revised the classification of hypersensitivity/allergic diseases ahead of ICD-11 and validated the revision by crowdsourcing. Gaps and trade-offs were identified after careful comparison between ICD-10 and ICD-11 beta phase linearization codes, allowing construction of a classification proposal. The proposal was sent to 171 members of interest groups and leaderships, including the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) sections, interest groups, and executive committee.

The researchers received comments from 50 of the 171 members contacted. Furthermore, the proposal was discussed at meetings with experts of EAACI sections and interest groups and was presented in meetings during the 2014 EAACI annual congress. The result was construction of a high-level complex structure of classification of hypersensitivity/allergic diseases. The proposed model has been presented to the World Health Organization groups in charge of ICD revision.

"The international collaboration of experts appreciates bilateral discussion and aims to get endorsement of their proposals for the final ICD-11," the authors write.
