Britain launching global superbug fight

Britain is to lead a global effort to combat antibiotic-resistant superbugs that threaten to knock medicine "back into the dark ages," Prime Minister David Cameron said Wednesday.

Unless are found, the rise of untreatable bacteria threatens a "unthinkable scenario" where once-treatable minor infections become fatal, he said.

As bacteria and viruses develop resistance to existing antibiotics, the effectiveness of such treatments naturally diminishes.

Cameron privately raised the issue with US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the G7 summit last month and believes he has their agreement for a co-ordinated international push.

"This is not some distant threat but something happening right now," Cameron told The Times newspaper.

"If we fail we are looking at an almost unthinkable scenario where antibiotics no longer work and we are cast back into the of medicine where treatable infections and injuries will kill once again.

"That simply cannot be allowed to happen and I want to see a stronger, more coherent global response."

Jim O'Neill, the former chief economist of US investment bank Goldman Sachs, is to lead an interational expert group aiming to spark the development of a new generation of antibiotics.

He has been tasked with considering how developing countries can be encouraged to improve control of existing antibiotics, of which only five new types have been introduced since the 1960s.

Scientific advisers "are all saying this is one of the most serious health problems the world faces," Cameron said.

"For many of us we only know a world where infections or sicknesses can be quickly remedied by a visit to the doctor and a course of antibiotics.

"But that protection is at risk as never before. Resistance to antibiotics is now a very real and worrying threat."

The initial £500,000 ($860,000, 630,000 euros) cost of the work will be met by the Wellcome Trust biomedical research charity.

Drug-resistant bacteria, viruses and parasites threaten not only the ability to treat deadly infections but also most aspects of modern medicine, said the trust's director Jeremy Farrar.

"From cancer treatment to Caesarean sections, therapies that save thousands of lives every day rely on antibiotics that could soon be lost," he said.

"We are failing to contain the rise of resistance, and failing to develop new drugs to replace those that no longer work. We are heading for a post-antibiotic age."

Chief medical officer Sally Davies, the British government's principal medical adviser, said that across Europe, at least 25,000 people a year die from infections which are resistent to .

She said adults had two kilogrammes of bacteria in their bodies, "but they can infect us if our immune systems are not so good".

Experiments in hospitals showed that having copper laminates in one room in the ER lowered the rate of infection in the adjoining room by around 50%, as I recalled, and lowered the rate of infection in the original room by more than that. Not exactly sure on the numbers, but it was huge.

That was well over a year ago.

The major hospital in my area has not installed any copper laminates yet. I don't know about other hospitals, but I think it should be an FDA and/or OSHA mandate that all ER rooms, except maybe 1 (possibly Wilson's patients) should be required to have copper laminate counter tops and handles for all drawers and faucets, and toilet flush handle.

It's ridiculous that this passive, safe technology is KNOWN to work with incredible efficiency, and has not yet been mandated. Why? Price?

WTF...the COST of treating one patient with a super-bug is more than the PRICE retrofitting an entire ER room.

All work surfaces should be coppery laminated. Even keyboards if possible.

I don't get it?

It serves everyone's medical interest and financial interests to institute required copper surfacing of all work spaces in hospitals.

It decreases patient-to-patient transfer.
Decreases staff-to-patient transfer.
Decreases patient-to-staff transfer.

This should lower the total cost of medicine to the Hospital, as well as the total cost to insurance and government healthcare programs, and the total cost to the average patient by lowering the cost of medical insurance, since lower infection rate means lower damages.

Copper is expensive, but it's not THAT expensive. It's being sold for ceiling tiles and home counter-top laminates, why not Hospitals, right where "Super-Bugs" are born?

"All materials were easily cleaned after the first soiling episode but a build-up of cells and soil was observed on the copper surfaces after several cleaning/wiping cycles. Stainless steel remained highly cleanable. Accumulation of material on copper is presumably due to the high reactivity of copper, resulting in surface conditioning. This phenomenon will affect subsequent cleaning, aesthetic properties and possibly antibacterial performance."
